History of The Time

The Time is one of the most innovative and often-imitated R&B bands of the ’80s. Under the early direction of Prince the band released its first self-titled album in 1981 and quickly became known for highly entertaining and energetic live shows. Rolling Stone magazine once called The Time “the funkiest band in America,” and in 1983 the group was nominated for an American Music Award.

The band’s keyboard-oriented grooves, rock guitar edge, and Morris Day’s bravado all contributed to what became known as the ‘Minneapolis sound’ of the early ’80s. The Time’s hits include “Cool,” “Gigolos Get Lonely Too,” “The Bird” and “Jungle Love,” among others, and all four of the band’s CDs have gone gold with sales of 500,000 copies or more. Original members include Morris Day, Jellybean Johnson, Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson, Jimmy Jam and Monte Moir.

The Time has appeared on many television shows including Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show, Soul Train, Arsenio Hall and Top of The Pops. They have also appeared in the movies “Purple Rain,” “Graffiti Bridge,” and “Silent Jay and Bob Strike Back.”

The band has toured on and off through the years in the U.S. as well as Europe and Japan. In 1995 The Time took to the road again and have been welcomed back by a wide and loyal audience.
